The avengers: The town of no return

LO: to analyse representation and use of media language in series 4, episode 1.

Britishness:

  • Tea and cake
  • Setting of the town
  • Staying in the pub
  • wary of outsiders
  • outfits
  • Their way of speech
  • accent
  • Manors

How was media language used to show the social context of the 1960's ?

Media language is used to show the social context through Mise-en-scene. The scene was based in london in a high end apartment. John steed wears a suit and hat which is stereotypical of Englands men in the 1960s, he always has an umbrella as well, which is also hinting at the bad weather in England. John Steed is wearing a suit which shows that he is middle class, The avengers is aimed at working/middle class, so the viewers can relate to the show. Emma Peel wears the latest fashion so that people who like to get the the newest fashion an listen to the latest music can relate to her.

It is also shown through camera work. Through out this seen there is close ups, mid shots and long shots. During the scene John and Emma are fencing in her living room and during the fencing emma turns around and john smacks her bum with the sword ( close up ). This suggest that men are in power and don't respect women in the 1960s but the fact a men and women are fencing together makes them equal and in some shots emma is in power.
