Magazine ownership & regulation

LO: research ownership, regulation & institution involved in music magazines.

  • IPC media - Uncut magazines
  • Bauer media-Q magazines, Mojo , the box,downtown country,magic
  • Condé Nast-Pitch fork magazines
  • Immediate media-Radio times
  • Hearst-no music magazines
  • BBC
The best two ways magazines make money is by people buying their magazine and the other way is by adverts, either in their magazines or on tv or advertised in the street. If they own more then one type of magazine they can advertise their magazines for free so they are not spending more money on adverts.

Ownership

The majority of magazines are published by nine companies but their titles make up nearly 75% of the market. This means they have a massive influence over audiences and their companies will only get bigger as they control most of the market.

Media regulation & law

IPSO is The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) is the independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK. Ipso makes sure the newspapers and magazines follow the editors code.

Future of magazines

The biggest thing thats changed magazines is that its gone digital. Its cheaper and production is also cheaper. Its quicker and easier to do.
