Editing


LO: understand how the editing of different shots can can create and change and change the meaning of a scene and a film.

  • Editing is selecting, combining and ordering shots to add meaning and continuity.
Elements of editing

  • cutting
  • transitions 
  • pace and length of a shot 
  • rhythm
  • cgi and animation 
Cutting 
  • in joining one shot to another, an editor can use many different cuts.
  • Cutting on action ( match action ) - Following the main person or props

  • cut away turning into shot of a person then cut back into the character or show in the character head 
  • cross cutting inter cuts between two scenes that are happening at the same time
  • straight cut a basic cut between one scene to another with no transitions
  • match cut ( graphic match ) linked scenes with similar features 
  • eye line match cuts to what they are seeing
  • shot reverse shot
